10 Research Fellowships to excellent junior academics. Deadline: 1 June 2014.
Applications are welcome from candidates of all disciplines who have completed their doctoral studies within the last three years. Applicants must present an independent research project as part of their application. The project must be supported by a professor of LMU Munich.

Postdoctoral Researcher – Environmental Sciences – Forest Modelling PostDoc Position (University of Freiburg · Biometry and Environmental System Analysis)
The ideal candidate has a PhD and a background that combines ecology or forest sciences with modeling and statistics. While not compulsory, prior experience with forest models (LPJ-GUESS), C/C++ programming, data analysis, Bayesian statistics and functional ecology will be a bonus. We search for a colleague with an appreciation of scientific rigor, a passion for research, and an excellent publication record.

Research task: The position is funded within the framework of the Biodiversity Exploratories, a platform for biodiversity research on three sites across Germany. The PostDoc will use data from these sites to parameterize the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model, and subsequently test a number of hypotheses regarding resource and niche portioning between the tree species. The project will collaborate with colleagues from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, and there will be ample opportunities for networking and professional interactions beyond this core group through the embedding in the Biodiversity Exploratories and an additional EU COST Action on forest modeling.
Location and working place: Freiburg is a medium size university town in southern Germany. It is generally considered a very attractive place to live in due to its favorable climate, its geographic location, and its cultural and social life. The University of Freiburg, located within walking distance to the city center, harbors an active and international research community in the field of Ecology and Environmental Sciences. More information about the research interests of the Department of Biometry & Environmental System Analysis can be found at http://www.biom.uni-freiburg.de/
Conditions: The position is available for a period of three years. The position is paid according to salary level E 13 (TVL) and is available immediately.
Application: Please address your application (comprising a cover letter explaining your reasons to apply for this position as well as qualifications that you find particularly relevant for this position, a CV, short statement of research interests, and contact details of two or more references) in a single PDF-file sending an email here. Questions can be addressed to Florian Hartig. An initial selection will be made on 12th of May 2014, but applications will be considered until the position is filled.

Computational Population Genetics & Viral Drug-Resistance Evolution PostDoc Position (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne · School of Life Science, Switzerland, Lausanne)

The Jensen Lab has two open postdoc positions.  In both cases, the ideal candidate will work on the intersection of theory development, statistical method design, and data analysis. However, candidates with particular expertise in one of these areas, with an interest to develop the others, will be happily considered.
The first will be centered around the study of cryptic coloration in wild mouse populations – a long-term Swiss NSF funded collaboration between our group, the Hoekstra Lab (Harvard), and the Excoffier Lab (Berne) – with the possibility of spending time in all three groups. The project has recently undergone a large expansion, and this new hire will work on both novel population genetic method development for the joint inference of selection and demography, as well as the analysis of multiple newly generated datasets. For examples of recent lab publications in this area, please see:
1) Linnen et al. 2009. On the origin and spread of an adaptive allele in Peromyscus mice. Science 325: 1095-98.
2) Domingues et al. 2012. Targeted re-sequencing reveals a single recent origin of a beneficial pigment allele in cryptic beach mice. Evolution 66: 3209-23.
3) Linnen et al. 2013. Adaptive evolution of multiple traits through multiple mutations at a single gene. Science 339: 1312-16.

The second will be centered around the study of viral drug-resistance evolution utilizing both experimental and clinical data, a long-term European Research Council (ERC) funded project. This new hire will work on both theory development related to extensions of Fisher’s Geometric Model, method development pertaining to the inference of the distribution of fitness effects, as well as the analysis of large-scale datasets from both Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and influenza virus . For examples of recent lab publications in this area, please see:

The Jensen Lab is an active research group, with current postdocs and PhD students coming from backgrounds spanning biology, mathematics, and computer science. We are located in the School of Life Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva and at the base of the Alps.  The working language of the lab is English.

Starting dates are flexible, and salaries are highly competitive (newly appointed postdocs begin at CHF 81,000 = EUR 66,000 = USD 92,000 / year). Both positions have available funding for three years, and contracts are renewed annually. Interested applicants should send a CV, contact information for three references, as well as a cover letter stating general research interests as well as fit to the desired position. Applications should be sent to this email by June 01, 2014.
