Postdoctoral Researcher – Environmental Sciences – Forest Modelling PostDoc Position (University of Freiburg · Biometry and Environmental System Analysis)
The ideal candidate has a PhD and a background that combines ecology or forest sciences with modeling and statistics. While not compulsory, prior experience with forest models (LPJ-GUESS), C/C++ programming, data analysis, Bayesian statistics and functional ecology will be a bonus. We search for a colleague with an appreciation of scientific rigor, a passion for research, and an excellent publication record.
Research task: The position is funded within the framework of the Biodiversity Exploratories, a platform for biodiversity research on three sites across Germany. The PostDoc will use data from these sites to parameterize the LPJ-GUESS ecosystem model, and subsequently test a number of hypotheses regarding resource and niche portioning between the tree species. The project will collaborate with colleagues from the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt, and there will be ample opportunities for networking and professional interactions beyond this core group through the embedding in the Biodiversity Exploratories and an additional EU COST Action on forest modeling.

Computational Population Genetics & Viral Drug-Resistance Evolution PostDoc Position (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne · School of Life Science, Switzerland, Lausanne)
The Jensen Lab has two open postdoc positions. In both cases, the ideal candidate will work on the intersection of theory development, statistical method design, and data analysis. However, candidates with particular expertise in one of these areas, with an interest to develop the others, will be happily considered.
The first will be centered around the study of cryptic coloration in wild mouse populations – a long-term Swiss NSF funded collaboration between our group, the Hoekstra Lab (Harvard), and the Excoffier Lab (Berne) – with the possibility of spending time in all three groups. The project has recently undergone a large expansion, and this new hire will work on both novel population genetic method development for the joint inference of selection and demography, as well as the analysis of multiple newly generated datasets. This new hire will work on both theory development related to extensions of Fisher’s Geometric Model, method development pertaining to the inference of the distribution of fitness effects, as well as the analysis of large-scale datasets from both Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and influenza virus . The Jensen Lab is an active research group, with current postdocs and PhD students coming from backgrounds spanning biology, mathematics, and computer science. We are located in the School of Life Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva and at the base of the Alps. The working language of the lab is English.
Starting dates are flexible, and salaries are highly competitive (newly appointed postdocs begin at CHF 81,000 = EUR 66,000 = USD 92,000 / year). BECAS TRAVESÍA IBÉRICA 2014 – proyecto educativo durante la Semana Santa
Para participar en un proyecto educativo que genere un proceso de cambio para construir sociedades inclusivas y no sitúe a las personas arriba o abajo.
Subiendo al Sur organizará durante la Semana Santa de 2014 una travesía educativa por diversas zonas rurales de la Comunidad de Madrid, comenzando el 11 de abril en el Valle del Lozoya y recorriendo durante 10 días pequeños municipios madrileños. Se visitará el patrimonio arquitectónico, museos y espacios naturales.
OBJETIVO: encuentro intergeneracional para conocer la cultura viva y los modos de vida de los pueblos que se visiten, convirtiendo a los participantes en portavoces de su legado y tradición.
CONDICIONES PARA PARTICIPAR
Dominar el idioma español, ser mayor de edad y estar matriculado/a durante el curso 2013-2014 en algún centro superior de estudios. Se seleccionarán estudiantes de entre 18 y 30 años de edad, en mérito a su motivación personal y emprendimiento social.
